A CD release party for Ky Babyn showcased his album, I’ll Work for Whiskey, and his driving, toe-tapping country sound to an audience at St. Paul Regional Fine Arts Theatre on Saturday night.
Local rising star Cassidy Zahar opened the show, then giving over the stage to Babyn, who brought his music, which he defines as “alternative country,” to the stage, along with his backing band. The label is hard to pin down, he says, adding alternative music has the flexibility to move from anything to a rockabilly sound to a more pop-oriented rock country.
A full crowd at the Fine Arts Theatre were treated to songs taken from Babyn’s life, evoking visions of driving long country roads to eating elephant ears at a county fair, in an engaging and energetic show that showed off Babyn’s musical talent.
Coming off the CD release party, Babyn is hoping to keep his momentum going by getting more nominations for the Edmonton Music Awards, which is meant to highlight Edmonton-area musicians who have released a single or whole CD in 2010. Anyone can nominate an artist in more than one category; the top five eligible artists with the most nominations in their category will make up the official nominee lists. The Edmonton Music Awards Council will then select a winner from each category.
Babyn has been nominated for best single, best album for I’ll Work for Whiskey and best country/folk artist. He’s also been nominated as an artist to watch for, with the winner for that category to be determined solely by public voting.
